shoplifting

Hello, you guys! How are you doing? Well, I'd like to have a discussion about this article in our next class - March 9th. Please, read it and be prepared!

Sarah and Lisa always enjoyed hanging out at the mall. But one Saturday, after shopping for jeans, Sarah pulled a new shirt out of her bag. Lisa didn't remember seeing her buy it.

"I didn't," Sarah told her. "I lifted it."

Lisa was upset and puzzled. Stealing didn't seem like something Sarah would do.

Who Shoplifts?
There's no typical shoplifter — people who steal from stores can be any age, race, gender, and social and economic background. Shoplifters generally fall into two categories:

•Professional shoplifters. These people usually take expensive items, like clothing and jewelry, that they can resell easily.
•Amateur or casual shoplifters. Most shoplifters are in this group. Casual shoplifters don't usually go into a store with the intention of stealing — they simply see the opportunity to take something and do.
Many people assume that shoplifters have a mental disorder or that they must really need the items they are stealing in order to survive. But the truth is that's not why most people steal. Very few people have kleptomania (a compulsive urge to steal), and many people who steal have enough money to pay for the items.

Someone might shoplift for many reasons. But there's no way around the fact that shoplifting is stealing — and in most places there are heavy penalties for it, including being arrested and possibly charged with a crime.

Some people may not realize how serious shoplifting can be. What might seem like an innocent prank can actually affect a person's future, including the chances of getting a job. Lots of teens find out the hard way that stores take shoplifting very seriously

Stealing things can be a disease or not. You must have an opinion of a specialist to know if the person is or not a kleptomaniac but there's a lot of people who just fake being a person with this disease.
One thing about this subject that really calls my attention is that if you're a rich person, people will tract you like a kleptomaniac and if you're poor, they will call you stealer.

I'm agree with Amanda. People who are rich, tract them like a kleptomanic and if them are poor, they will call you stealer.

There are shoplifting by need, by neurological diseases - kleptomaniac -, and even worst, by fun. As there is no a reason, the people who steal just for fun should be punished. On the other hand, the other 2 cases should be evaluated, each one with their own cause, and they shouldn't be punished as the shoplifiting by fun. They ought be punished as they diserve and receive medical and/or primary care.

well, steal things like clothes and jewelery it is a crime. Everything that have been stoled is a crime but i think we have the necessary crime, people who live in the street and don't have money even to candys. I'm not saying that I support the crime, but we MUST know the difference of the stupid, selfish crime and the necessary

In my opinion, when a person steals something without necessity she must be punished, because we live in a society with rules, and if a person violates this rule and not be punished, everyone will start to steal and it would be a chaos. But is necessary to analyze the situation before judging.

I think that the advertising companys have a great influence in the mind of consumer.
In a subtle way, the person can become addicted to shopping. Steal is something very serious...if a family know that someone in their family are stealing, they need to find a way to help.

I agree with Garbossa, but I think that shoplifters don't steal because they are in bad conditions, especially without money. And I don't know if anyone already saw this situation but the security of the shopping are oriented to not leave beggars entry on the shopping. Like the most said, stealing things from shoppings are a neurological disease, or even worst some people do just for fun.
